A healthy and content baby girl, Jaylenne Alexi Varela, was born at 10:59
pm on Friday, January 3, 2020. Her proud mom, Fabiola Cerbantes and dad,
Juan Varela were surprised when they learned they were the first natural
birth in 2020 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) in Gillette,
Wyoming. At 7 lbs. 9.5 oz and 20” long, little Jaylenne, was due
January 13th but decided to arrive sooner with no complications.
Waiting until the 3rd day of the month seems like a long time without any births, however, it
needs to be a natural birth to qualify as the New Year Baby. Indeed there
have been babies born since the roll of the new decade but they have been
either induced or caesarian births; if a natural birth becomes medically
necessary to become a c-section those also qualify. As of press time,
there have been four births in 2020.
In addition to being New Year Baby 2020, Jaylenne is also the first New
Year Baby in Maternal Child’s new location. As part of the strategic
inpatient room replacement project at Campbell County Memorial Hospital, the
Maternal Child unit moved on July 29, 2019. Through January 3, 2020, 289 babies have
been born in the new unit with a total of 660 babies born at CCMH in 2019.
