Nine tips for healthy and safe swimming

There’s nothing quite like jumping in a pool or lake on a hot summer day to cool off. Splashing around and having fun with family and friends is one of the best ways to pass the time. Unfortunately, all that fun in the sun can sometimes distract us from the dangers and health risks associated with swimming.

Pools are a great avenue to spread germs, diarrhea, and illness. While chlorine may kill a lot of germs and bacteria, some can live in the water for days. Also, according to the CDC approximately ten people die each day from unintentional drowning. Some of the risk factors associated with drowning are lack of swimming ability, failure to wear lifejackets, lack of barriers, alcohol use, and no close supervision.

Here at Campbell County Health we care about your health and well-being. That is why we would like to share nine quick tips to help you and your family stay healthy and safe in the water this summer.

  • Stay out of the water if you have diarrhea
  • Shower before you get into the water
  • Don’t pee or poop in the water
  • Don’t swallow the water
  • Ensure that lifejackets are U.S. Coast Guard approved; don’t rely on lifejackets alone
  • Never swim alone; have a swimming buddy
  • Maintain constant supervision of children swimming or near water; avoid distractions
  • Enroll your children in swimming lessons
  • If a child is missing check the water first; time is precious in drowning incidents

So take some extra precautions as you head to the pool or lake this summer and remember that the water is only as clean as the people in it.
