Get more from the grocery store

Mar 31, 2016

This week, more than 15 people toured Don's Supermarket with Registered Dietitian Jamie Marchetti to learn how they could get more from the grocery store.

At the free event, participants learned how to compare the benefits of fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables to make the most of their choices. Jamie encouraged shoppers to purchase fresh produce when possible, but showed them how to select healthy canned and frozen options when fresh selections were not the best choice for them.

Three tips Jamie wants all grocery shoppers to know include:

  • watch for added sugars in canned and frozen goods using the alias fructose, dextrose and glucose – or any other "ose" word – and select fruits that are canned in fruit juice not syrup
  • when purchasing juice, always look for labeling that says 100% juice
  • and, when purchasing canned goods, opt for labels that read "low sodium," "unsalted" or "no salt added"
