CCH awards first DAISY Award to Emergency Nurse Brittany Thrall

May 07, 2020

On May 7, Campbell County Health awarded its first DAISY Award to Brittany Thrall, RN, who works in the Campbell County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) Emergency Department. The Daisy Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day.

Fellow nurses, colleagues and leadership secretly gathered to surprise the nurse with the award. Brittany was nominated for the DAISY Award by Kayli Reynolds, whose daughter, Ryleigh, was a patient in early March; the pair were also part of the ceremony to recognize Brittany for her excellent nursing skills.

Ryleigh had fallen off of the top of a bunk bed, and hit her head. Riley also has Von Willebrand’s Disorder, a lifelong bleeding disorder where a person’s blood doesn't clot well. Because of this disorder, Kayli brought Ryleigh to the ED to be checked out.

According to Kayli, Brittany was extremely friendly, welcoming, attentive, and kept the duo informed as to what was going on while they were in the ED. Brittany brought Ryleigh stickers and color pages to keep her entertained, as well as snacks, and engaged them in conversation, asking about Ryleigh’s pajamas and her interests.

“Even though Brittany was only with us the last hour before shift change, she stuck out in my mind. She could have easily been tired and rushed to go home, but she wasn’t. It was refreshing to have such a bright soul taking care of us,” says Kayli.

Brittney says that she credits all of her Emergency Department colleagues for earning this honor, saying that they are always helping her learn the best medical practices and provide amazing support. Brittany has worked for CCH since June 2016.

Throughout the ceremony, Brittany was reminded of how sweet and caring she was with several goodies including homemade cinnamon rolls. Brittany was also given the Healer’s Touch sculpture, which is hand-carved in Zimbabwe, and a lapel pin to wear on her badge to show her accomplishment and a certificate of recognition.
