CCH 2018 Volunteer Spotlight: Lisa Mahylis

Dec 03, 2018

Meet Lisa Mahylis, a weekly volunteer in the Campbell County Memorial Hospital Gift Shoppe in Gillette, Wyoming.

Lisa retired from Campbell County School District three years ago, and now has time to do all the things she never had time to do when she was working full-time. Lisa’s career background is in special education and occupational therapy. Both her parents worked in healthcare, dad as an optometrist and mom as a medical records auditor for the state of Minnesota. Volunteering was always a strong focus in Lisa’s family, and she believes in giving back.

Lisa says that volunteering keeps her finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the community, and she gets to be a part of those little decisions that happen at critical times—like helping a new dad pick out a baby gift or helping a family member purchase a gift for someone in ICU. She enjoys the contact she has with people, knowing that she can make a difference in someone’s day, whether it is a light-hearted visit with an employee just being there if someone is experiencing a tragic situation.

Lisa is expanding her volunteering to The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center in January in either the Activities department or helping with resident rehabilitation.

Lisa’s husband Jay also volunteers for CCH, serving on the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC), a group that provides a community perspective on a number of patient issues and questions. Her son Jared is an orthopedic surgeon and son Ryan is an officer in the Gillette Police Department. Lisa and Jay have one granddaughter and two grandsons.

Lisa likes to keep busy, and her hobbies include yoga, scuba diving, winter sports, traveling and quilting. She is an active gardener with an annual plot at the Community Garden, and her friends are the beneficiaries of fresh and canned produce from Lisa’s garden each year.

Lisa embodies the spirit of volunteerism—giving her time for the opportunity to help others. Thank you Lisa, for your smiling face and helpful attitude each week at the Gift Shoppe.
