CCH 2018 Volunteer Spotlight: Shirley George

Jan 01, 2019

Meet Shirley George, a valuable volunteer at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital Gift Shoppe in Gillette, Wyoming.

One of her favorite aspects of volunteering at the hospital is the people. “Everyone is so friendly and welcoming,” says Shirley.

“Shirley is instrumental in the organization and presentation of the Gift Shoppe for our customers,” said Chris Buxton, Volunteer Services Coordinator. “She has a great eye for gathering items for display and goes out of her way to assist our visitors.”

Shirley is no stranger to CCMH. Her husband, Ken, retired from Campbell County Health after a 35-year career as a Pharmacist. “Gillette has given me and my family so much--volunteering is a good way to give back,” says Shirley.

“We welcome the opportunity to have Shirley volunteer when she is in Gillette,” said Chris.

In addition to CCH, Shirley volunteers her time working as a Theater Ambassador at Cam-Plex. She assists with events by scanning tickets, handing out programs or cleaning after programs, among other various duties.

Prior to her retirement, Shirley taught second grade at Wagonwheel Elementary School for 41 years. She misses working with kids, but enjoys helping run youth programs at her church. She teaches Sunday school and helps with Vacation Bible School at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

“What little you give back, you get back hundredfold,” says Shirley about her volunteer efforts.

When not volunteering, she and her husband love to travel. Kenya, China and Egypt have been her top three favorite places they have visited. In the United States, they frequently travel to Minnesota as they are busy renovating their cabin.

Shirley embodies the spirit of volunteerism; giving her time for the opportunity to help others. Thank you, Shirley, for sharing your time with CCH.
