Spring allergies are behind us, but for headaches sufferers, that doesn't mean you're
fully in the clear. Many factors go into summer headaches, and for some,
the pain can keep them indoors and out of the sun all summer long. Fortunately,
there are ways you can avoid triggers and keep your summer headaches down
to a minimum.
Stay Hydrated
With the heat rising, staying hydrated has never been more vital to your health.
Dehydration, excessive sweating, and hot temperatures can all increase your chances
of getting a headache. An excellent way to identify if you are genuinely
hydrated is through urine color. Clear or light-colored urine is a sign
that you are properly hydrated—any darker and you should drink more water.
Limit Sun Exposure
A big brimmed hat that keeps the sun off your face, neck, and back can
help you enjoy the summer rays without the blinding pain of a headache.
Don’t forget a good pair of sunglasses and
sunscreen, too.
Avoid Triggers
Pay attention to what could be causing your headaches. Is there a particular
scent that is around when your head pain begins? The more you pay attention
to specific patterns, the better you'll be able to avoid them. Some
of the most common triggers can be alcohol and foods high in sodium and
nitrates. Depending on your sensitivity, limiting your intake can help
keep you headache free.
Don’t Overdo it
One of the first signs of heat-illness is a headache. Often, this occurs
from strenuous activities. If you plan on playing any summer sports or
like to work out outside, be sure to listen to your body, stay hydrated,
and take rests when needed.
