Kelly Hunnicutt, MS, CCC-SLP, arrived in Gillette, Wyoming on December
3, 2018 without snow boots or an ice scraper.
The new
Short Term Rehabilitation Manager at
The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center came here from Florida as a traveling speech therapist. She had never been
to Wyoming before, and jokingly says she thought it was part of Canada!
Kelly was very impressed with Rehab Director
Shannon Sorensen during her initial phone interview, and with the continuum of care that
Campbell County Health provides to the community. She says she felt welcome,
comfortable and supported as soon as she arrived.
When the opportunity arose for Kelly to become the Manager, she and her
husband Tim decided to go for it. Kelly has worked in all levels of adult
care during her 25 years as a speech therapist and therapy manager, including
acute hospitals, rehab as well as long-term acute, home health and skilled
rehab facilities.
The ability to care for both acute rehab patients and long-term care residents
in one facility is a new challenge for Kelly, as she has never lived in
a community as small as Gillette before. She explains that in metropolitan
areas there is usually more competition and more specialization in adult
rehab services.
Kelly’s brother Keith moved with them to Gillette, and lives close
by in the Cottonwood apartments. Keith has some health and developmental
challenges, and Kelly feels comfortable knowing that The Legacy is a place
where Keith could live if he ever needed to.
“It’s the best care I’ve ever seen,” she said.
